we left bordentown, nj at the crack of 10 to begin our day off in the big city. the sun was shining, it was a perfect 70 something degrees and soon we’d be in new york. woo hoo. the guys were off to little italy while my plan involved the de kooning exhibit at moma and a possible side trip to barneys. (i can dream, can’t i?) so, there we are - motoring down the new jersey turnpike all smiley with our to-go coffees in hand when this dark sedan-type car pulls up along side of us and the driver starts giving us the eye. ”why’s that guy staring at us?”, i say. and then “woop-woop-woop”. it’s the law! ”what’d we do?” “are we supposed to have our seatbelts on?” “anybody got any outstanding warrants?” ”we weren’t speeding were we?” “i probably got some parking tickets i didn’t pay in texas” there’s no place to pull over. then ensues an abbreviated version of the famous o.j. slow-mo car chase. finally, staring guy in the dark sedan-type car pulls in front of us and we all pull over to the side of the road. we all sit in our respective vehicles for a while. “i couldn’t have been speeding” “put your seatbelt on” “were we speeding?” he finally gets out and walks up to our car. he’s dressed in a suite and a tie and holding, not wearing a bullet proof police vest. i guess we looked a suspect but, not that dangerous. ”hi, where are you coming from?”……”nashville”………”were you in bordentown last night?”………”we stayed there last night at the ramada”…..”did you stop at a truck stop?”…..”no.we stopped at the starbucks”……”can i see some i.d.?”…………back to the dark sedan-type car he goes. after a while he’s back leaning on the passenger window. turns out a truck stop close to where we were staying had just been robbed and they left in a big silver suburban like the one we were driving. persons of interest in a robbery! now, that’s some kinda way to start the day. we made it into the city without further incident. the guys had a big meal in little italy and i have a head full of colors. a good time was had by all.
